IBM Partners with the DNS-Entrepreneurship Center to develop technology skills amongst youth

30/10/2016 - Cairo, Egypt - The Domain Name System Entrepreneurship Center (DNS-EC) and IBM Egypt are pleased to announce their partnership on a “Youth Outreach and Capacity Building” program that aims to build and develop the DNS related skills of youth across Africa and the Middle East through joint workshops and training sessions.

The DNS-EC main objective is to develop local capacities and engage interested parties from across both regions in the global domain name industry ecosystem.

In 2014, ICANN signed an agreement with Egypt as National Telecommunication Regulatory Authority (NTRA), to establish the Domain Name System Entrepreneurship Center (DNS-EC) for developing the domain name industry in Africa and the Middle East.

Over the past 18 months, the DNS-EC has held 11 workshops in six different countries covering a wide range of DNS technical, policy, business and legal topics. The workshops have attracted more than 200 participants from over a dozen countries. Participants’ backgrounds varied from technical, to policy and business development professionals, legal experts and IP lawyers, coming from ccTLD registries, registrars, hosting companies, law firms, government agencies and academic networks.

This year, with the launch of the "Youth Outreach and Capacity Buildinga program, DNS-EC aims to extend outreach by specifically focusing on the region’s youth to provide them with the necessary skills required to build and sustain the domain name industry in the Middle East and Africa.

Skills development is one of the top needs for the growth of the IT sector. Both ICANN and IBM have been striving to enhance the ecosystem through programs targeting their areas of expertise to pass the knowledge and know-how. One of the methods is through launching programs that focus on upgrading the skills of the continent's university students and fresh graduates.

IBM has several initiatives to that effect, such as the IBM MEA University initiative, an academic program that works with universities to train and certify faculty members and students in the areas of the latest emerging technologies to better align university curricula with the IT industry needs and trends. The initiative covers areas like Mobile Computing, Cyber Security, Analytics, Big Data, Cloud Computing, etc. It emphasizes the role of IBM to develop careers in high technology computer industry that would provide the basis for developing the economy and IT workforce in Africa and the Middle East.

Another initiative is the LEADing to Africa internship program, which is a part of IBM strategy to create the next generation of top talents through focusing on equipping students with the latest skills, real-world experiences and an undeniable passion for Africa to help deliver this strategy for IBM, its clients and business partners.

Both DNS-EC and IBM are aiming to give their objectives a more impactful reach through collaborating to enrich the experience of the students and broaden the curricula.

The workshop is planned to take place between October 30 and November 2, 2016, and will cover the following:

Day 1: Welcome and Introductory speeches by IBM, ICANN, NTRA, and DNS-EC; open discussions about current and future collaborations; and a coffee break. (1 - Hour)
Day 1 - Day 3: IBM Cyber Security Appscan training (IBM)
Day 4 - Day 5: DNS Operations and DNSSEC training (ICANN/NTRA/DNS-EC)
